District Governor Visits September 28, 2005 Meeting

On September 28, 2005 District Governor Dave Smith and his wife Barbara honored us with their presence at our general meeting. Accompanying DG Dave and Barbara were Region Chairman Dave Deihm, Zone Chairman Len Crowther and Honeybrook Lions Club member Art Pecht.

DG Dave gave a very enjoyable and impressive speech where he announced that his theme for this term is: 'Proud to be a Lion'. He stated that keys to this theme are 'involvement and accomplishment'. Satisfaction of these keys would assure that we are 'Proud to be Lions'. His set goals and objectives for each District 14-P Club including increasing net membership by one (1); adding one (1) new community service and adding one (1) new fund raiser. He described a new 'success stories' program where clubs can share ideas via the 14-P web site. DG Dave also spoke of programs to assure membership retention. Namely, Proud Lion Award, Mentoring Program and Leadership Seminars.

The above picture shows DG Dave Smith presenting a memorabilia to Kimberton Lions President Mike Minckler. Following are some more pictures. Click on a picture to make it larger and use your browser's 'back' button to return.

On May 25, 2005 two members of the Honey Brook Lions came to recover their bell which, uncomfortable with the security provided by Honey Brook, fled to the Kimberton Lions for protection and safe keeping. (Click here for historical details.)

Pictured on the left, Kimberton Patrolwoman Suzette Wilson, who found the little 'tinkler' hitch-hiking on Kimberton Road, returns the bell to Kimberton Lions President Mike Minckler.
The center picture shows Honey Brook representatives Zone Chairman Dave Deihm (left) and  Past District Governor Walter Labs (right). In the center is the charming sight for sore eyes Kim Berton (aka) Wally Heidelmark). Kim is nationally renown for her breeding ability...yuck!

Meeting at Honeybrook - April 28, 2005

On Thursday, April 28, 2005 ten members of the Kimberton Lions Club took advantage of a gracious invite by the Honeybrook Lions Club to join them in their regular dinner meeting. This meeting was in lieu of our regularly scheduled Wednesday, April 27 meeting.

After arriving at the Honeybrook Lions meeting site we were taken for a tour of the facility. Honeybrook owns this old building that was once a Grange building. The upstairs is an auditorium and the downstairs hall is the Lions meeting place complete with a kitchen. We all enjoyed a wonderful meal of ham and bean soup, rolls, salad, chicken pot pie and peas. This was followed by coffee, tea and a variety of delicious pies. The meeting was then called to order by Honeybrook Lions President Alfreda Labs.

The Honeybrook meeting began traditionally with the Pledge of Allegiance and invocation. This was followed by a chorus of America (My Country Tis of Thee), which this writer found to be quite appropriate and exhilarating. After the business portion of the meeting came the program portion. This was an interesting film and presentation about Berks County's Joanna Furnace. After the program and prior to adjournment and another chorus of America, I (Bob Toff, Kimberton Lions Secretary) presented one of our small banners to Honeybrook President Alfreda. A good time was had by all.

At this point you would think that the evening was over and we uneventfully made our way home. But wait!

E-Mail to Honey Brook Lions

Lion ZC Dave:

Thank you very much for providing us with a very enjoyable time this past Thursday evening. The food was delicious and the program was enjoyable and informative. But, most importantly, the members of the Honeybrook Lions Club were extremely friendly and made us feel most welcomed. It was a great night!

Oh, I forgot to mention that after we had driven out of your parking lot on our way home in the Bader Mobile, we heard a faint sound from under one of the van’s bench seats. It sounded almost like a faint, whimpering ‘ping, ping’. After an exhausting 2.5 seconds of searching, guess what we found? You’re correct…. the Honeybrook Lions Club President’s Bell! There it was, all lonely, scared and cold. So, being good, thoughtful and loving Lions, we wrapped it in an old dirty rag, since that’s all we had to keep it warm. We cuddled it and read it a nighttime story about its mom and dad. I think it was called ‘For Whom The Bells Toll’. Anyway, when we explained that we needed to take it home, it ‘rang out’ a resounding  ‘No’ and told us that it didn’t want to go back to those people who left it alone and unguarded. We were shocked! Having no choice, we gave in to this poor little ‘ding-a-ling’ and decided to become its foster parents.

We truly expected a roadblock at the intersection of routes 10 and 322, or at least a car chase down route 23 by the State Police to search for the little ‘ding-dong’. But, no, none of that! Not a letter; not an email; not a phone call! Perhaps the little ‘ring-a-ding-dong’ was right all the time. Its parents just didn’t care about it!

Well, here we are being forced into caring for this little clangor. Compared to the Honeybrook Lions Club we are a poor group who don’t own our own building and own only one large banner. Woe is us! There’s no way we can afford to care for yet another bell. We only have one gavel; and, ringing two bells would be too complicated for our president and very confusing for our fellow ‘cousins’. Besides, it’s ‘tinkling’ all over the place.

We are therefore making this proclamation: Come get your darn bell at our next meeting on May 11 before it takes its ‘toll’ on our member foster parents. Unless you do, we’ll be forced to return it to you after its visit to Joanna Furnace for a heated slimming-down procedure. You’ll then be able to keep it in Lion President Alfreda’s handbag for safe keeping. But please remember, slag rings with a resounding THUD!

You’re not done yet! There’s a ransom to be paid. Please be prepared to purchase at least four (4) tickets for the Phoenixville Kiwanis Club’s 10th Annual ‘Great Duck Race’. The tickets are $5.00 each and we Kimberton Lions get a cut of each ticket sold. You could win as much as $1,000 and if you do, remember where you got the tickets!

Let me know how many will be in your rescue party so we can assure that we have enough vittles to satisfy your hunger. Lord knows you don’t serve enough at your meetings to feed ALL the troops in Iraq. You’d be short by about two meals. We were wondering when the rest of Honeybrook would show up for the second serving.

We look forward to your response. Thanks again for your hospitality.

Yours in serious fun,

Associate Foster Parent Lion Sec Bob Toff

New Members' Meeting - April 13, 2005

On April 13, 2005 the Kimberton Lions Club held our annual New Members' Meeting. This year some half-dozen prospective new members joined a host of current members at 'The Grange' in Kimberton. The drink and food, in the form of hot and cold appetizers, kept flowing throughout the evening. Not one, not two but three events highlighted the evening's festivities. Gus Meyer gave both an informative and interesting presentation of the history and mission of the Lions. There are more than 46,000  local clubs which are part of the world's largest service organization, with 1.4 million members serving in more than 190 countries and areas.
Ernie Basile gave an extremely clever and entertaining slide presentation that introduced our current members to the attending prospective members. This 'tongue in cheek' show was received with roars of laughter. One thing about our Kimberton Lions members.... we have no problem laughing at ourselves.
Another highlight, and one that gave us all a sense of great pride, was a presentation by Vice District Governor Dave Smith. As pictured above (click to make larger), VDG Dave presented a banner to our President Mike Minckler for our 2004 donation of more than $1,000 to the Delaware Valley Eye Bank.

Thanks to the New Members' Committee (Chris Nagle, Wayne Wisdom, Gary Horowitz, Bob Toff and Mike Minckler), and all the attending members and prospective members, a good time was had by all.

White Cane Day - April 9, 2005

On Saturday, April 9, 2005 from 9:00 A.M. 'til 2:00 P.M. the Kimberton Lions will accept donations and distribute our famous white canes. The event will be held in the Staples/Redners' shopping center. We need your help. Please send us an e-mail telling us what 'from and to' times you can help.

Last year we raised over $500 for Lion charities.

Thank you for contributing to White Cane Days. Your contributions allow Lions Clubs to provide millions of dollars to support an extensive program to eliminate preventable blindness and to sponsor drug awareness and educational programs for the youth of the world.

The Kimberton Area Lions Club makes regular support to the Eyebank of Delaware Valley, Chester County Association for the blind, Leader dogs for the blind and Beacon Lodge for the blind.

District Governor Fran Griffin's Speech - January 26, 2005

Visitation – Kimberton Area Lions Club

Thank you Zone Chairman Dave, President Mike, and distinguished Lions!

I bring you greetings from your International President, Clement Kusiak, the entire International Board of Directors of LCI, your Oak Brook staff and from your PA Council of Governors.

As Lions, we have always answered the call to serve others.   Throughout our history, Lions projects and other efforts have helped millions and serve as a model for community action.

·        Overall Lions donate more than 70 million hours of volunteer service to their communities each year.  This year we are expanding that number with all the man hours being provided by Lions in southeast Asia following the Tsunami disaster.

·        Lions donate an estimated $506 million to humanitarian projects each year.  This year we have given hundreds of thousands of dollars for emergency grants and expect to provide a multimillion dollar reconstruction project in southeast Asia.

·        Last year, over 3.5 million people who could not afford eye glasses received a recycled pair through Lions Clubs throughout the world.

·        The SightFirst program has made tremendous strides in the battle against blindness: more than 36 million treatments for river blindness, more than 3 million cataract surgeries and nearly 13,000 eye doctors and nurses were trained.

·        In our own district, we provided emergency grants for those flood victims in PA;  Districts P, A(Philadelphia and Bucks counties) and R (Montgomery county) have applied for a grant from the Philadelphia College of Optometry so we can provide free vision screening programs in these areas.  We will be asking local Lions clubs to assist with this project when the time comes. We already provide eye care costs for those referred to our district – just this week, I notified your secretary about three individuals in this area requiring assistance.

We owe these successes to our excellent service programs, but more importantly to you, the Lions who bring them to life.

Your International President, Clem Kusiak, in keeping with his presidential theme of “Share Success through Service” is asking us to examine our Lions activities and actions searching for ways to share our success with both Lions and our community.  If you stopped a random person in Kimberton, would that person be able to name one of the wonderful contributions that your club has made to this community?  Unfortunately, the person probably would not…  We recently had the state Membership Chairman speak at our cabinet meeting.  He said that he likes to stop for a cup of coffee in the area he is going to speak in and ask that same question.   Lions Clubs International is one of the world’s best kept secrets, most of our wonderful contributions go unnoticed in the community.   Sharing our success will not only reinforce our pride in our membership, but also will promote the involvement of other service-minded people who will want to be a part of the good that we do.

I know that your club is in the process of creating a club brochure – that is a great way to publicize your activities;Rehrersburg Lions Club created placemats with their information because they hold monthly pancake breakfasts; my own club, Eagle/Glenmoore started by using business cards with information printed on the back, now we have a brochure.  Newspaper articles, another way of spreading your news –

As we achieve our goals, we will derive personal benefit from our efforts.   But, more importantly, we will increase our pool of potential new leaders for the future, provide more hands to better serve our communities, and we will be able to conduct many more service projects and fundraising activities to support our many humanitarian efforts.

As your district governor this year, I am available to help you in any way that I can so you can reach your goals.  In order to stimulate membership, I have added a second pin with a red background to be given to every member of clubs attaining a 5% increase in membership this year – so far there are nine clubs up there – I may have to go back to work full time to pay for the red pins!  It will be worth it… I also will have a blue background pin for members of clubs who sponsor a new club.  The white background pin is my personal pin, but the red and blue have to be earned.

I challenge each of you individually and as a club to look for more ways to help create a new spirit of “Service” to better serve out community, for this will truly ensure the success of our Association.  I further challenge you to be the #1 club in our district.  I look forward to your support in making our district the best district within our multiple district and LCI.   Thank you for your continued support and hospitality.

"Dear Lion John and fellow Lions of the United States of America

On behalf of the President and Membership of the Lions Club of Port Shepstone, South Africa, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to all the people of the United States who have suffered as a result of this terrible tragedy that has taken place. It saddens us to hear of such terror especially considering the fact that this type of behaviour totally contradicts the Lions International motto on promoting peace throughout the world. We are all extremely concerned for you all and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I have already forwarded a message of condolence to International President Moore and I sincerely hope that this message is able to reach the members of the many Lions Clubs that exists in the United States. Now, more than ever, we must stand together and promote peace. We have already attended a special memorial service and held vigil for our friends in the United States.

May God be with you all during this terrible ordeal.

Lion Denis Thank you for your letter of sympathy. I too am saddened by such a terrible act of cowardice. I will enclose your letter to all the Lion WebRing members.

Heritage Acres -  October 11, 2003

The Kimberton Lions hosted another cookout for the residents and staff of Heritage Acres on Saturday October 11, 2003 starting 11:30 A.M.. The weather was beautiful and the food, donated by East Pikeland Township, was delicious and plentiful. A great time was had by all!!

Heritage Acres is a small facility for the elderly and disabled. Located in Charlestown Township, it houses  residents who are financially disadvantaged. Many of these people have lost contact with family and friends. Learning of their needs, the Kimberton Lions Club brought them a much needed TV  last year. Club members also found that they lacked basic personal items such as tooth paste and soap. So, the Club set out to make their lives a little bit better. On the Saturday before Christmas (12/21/02), Club members visited them with gifts of holiday cheer. Personal care items, gift certificates to KMART and candy were distributed.  And to make it even more festive, a pizza party was held. Rocco's, on Rt. 113, once again donated the pizzas.

On November 19, 2002 the Kimberton Fire Company presented us with a Certificate of Appreciation for helping with the procurement of their new Bullard® Thermal Imaging Camera. According to Bullard®, a thermal imager translates energy waves, which are emitted from hot objects, into viewable images to display a black and white "picture" of a fire scene. On the screen of a thermal imager, the hottest objects show as white, while the coolest objects show as black, and features of other objects show as varying shades of gray. The picture enables firefighters to see through smoke, find fires, and identify victims.

Mission Statement:  PSAAC exists to serve, support and enhance the lives of all older adults, 55 and older, by providing opportunities in the way of programs and activities designed to promote active, independent, healthy lifestyles.  This year’s Annual Fund Drive fell short of goal by 50%.  This along with other revenue sources has had a negative effect on the overall program.  As a result, preliminary budget projections for FY 2003-04 include reductions in staff and increased program fees.

 Kimberton Lions Reach Out
to Area Residents

Local Man
When the Club learned that a local man who was paralyzed from the chest down due to a work-related accident was trying to raise funds for a special wheelchair, members rose to the occasion by donating $1,000 to help. The Club was also instrumental in obtaining a donation of $250 from Phoenixville Federal Savings.

Thanx to all,
Wayne
2/8/01

Local Girl
The following information was provided by John Lapic of the Coventry Lions Club:

"Jessica is a local 7 year old Boyertown resident with Albinism and severe Nystagmus. She is currently being treated by the Feinblum Eye Institute. She requires a video magnifier to read. Through our club, the Boyertown School District is lending Jessica a used magnifier for the school, for this year only. They should be able to provide a new one with camera capabilities next year. Her mother has asked us if we (the Lions Club) can provide one for home use. As we (Coventry Lions) are a small club and lack adequate funds, and Jessica lives outside our area, our club's board has requested that I put her in touch with your club."

At the Kimberton Lions Club regular meeting of April 11, 2001 the members unanimously voted to contribute funds toward the purchase of the video magnifier for Jessica. Other area Lions Clubs have also pledged funds for the magnifier, the total cost of which is almost $2,900. The Kimberton Lions Club has pledged $500 with the provision to contribute more if required. This is another example of how the various Lions Clubs work together for the common good.

Antique Road Show - Held March 25, 2001

This year the Kimberton Lions Club  hosted what we hope to be the first annual Antique Road Show on March 25 at the Kimberton Fire House. It was a great success! We collected over $1,000 for the various projects of the Kimberton Lions.
We want to extend a big THANK YOU to all that made this possible; the Kimberton Lions' members who helped with the day's tasks, the skilled appraisers who gave of their valuable time to help the worthy causes of the Lions and, most importantly, the participants themselves.
