What’s Happening at the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley? Lots of things are happening. We have just concluded our 50th Anniversary. We thank all the Lions from the tri state area that helped us celebrate.

We have upgraded our computer system. Just like in your business or even at home. We love or hate our computer system. But it is vital for information storage, to communicate with the various governmental agencies we work with and the general storage of information. Part of this update involves the use of our accounting system.  Every 3-5 years we upgrade our computer system.

The budget for the next fiscal year has been set in place. We constantly monitor government regulations, which have a major impact on our budget process.

We have an urgent need for your District Directory as soon as it is published. Each month we get many calls about,” who can I contact in my community?” With out the most up to date club information we can not be as effective as we have in helping people improve their lives through eye health care.

We extend an invitation to you and your club to attend our Annual Meeting on Saturday June 14th at L’Affaire in Mountainside, N.J. That afternoon we will induct our first woman Chairperson/CEO Mary Devon O’Brien. Reservations may be made through the Eye Bank Office at 800-743-6667.

Our Endowment Committee is hard at work. In this unstable economic age, it is important that we have working capital to meet fiscal emergencies as they develop.

We invite you or your club to name a Gene Polar Fellowship. The funds ($1,000.) go into our Endowment Fund and we will have a Trustee come to one of your club or district meetings to make the presentation. We have speakers available for your club, zone or district programs. If you would like, we can arrange for your club to visit the Eye Bank to tour the facility and hold a dinner meeting.

We are directly involved with the MIND program on public television WYBE. A five minute Eye Bank PSA will be shown 18 times over the next year. Announcements will be seen by 5.9 million viewers in 11 counties that we serve. We are always looking for ways to expand our public relations program both to the clubs and to the general public.

Several of our trustees attended Lions Day at the DMV. The visited several NJ DMV sites and gave out donor information. We want to expand this program through out the Tri State Area. If your club would like to get involved, contact us. We will supply the material and put you in contact with trustees from your district.

During March and April we were involved in the following Cornea work:

Delaware- collected 30 corneas, 19 were used for local surgery and 5 were exported. (Not every harvested corneal is suitable for transplant. Some are given to teaching hospitals to train new cornea surgeons). New Jersey- collected 40 corneas- 19 were used for surgery and 8 were exported.  Pa-146 corneas harvested, 81 were used for surgery, 21 were exported.
